Frequent Dance Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How easy is it to get started?

English-style folk dancing does not involve any fancy footwork and all the moves are relatively simple. The character of each dance is created by the way that the moves are put together. The callers always explain all the moves for each dance and walk everyone through them first, so you know just what to do when we dance to the music.

If you do have any trouble during a dance the more experienced dancers will help you to be in the right place at the right time.

Which events are easiest?

Public events such as Barn Dances and Ceilidhs are often aimed at 'non-dancers' and beginners; sometimes as part of a function such as a wedding or party.

Experienced dancers also attend these,

especially when it is a club's 'Annual Party' or similar.

Club nights during the week are a good time to visit;

many clubs do not charge you for your first night with them.

What should I wear?

All you need is comfortable clothing and shoes without pointed heels.

You will probably find it easier if the soles of your shoes are fairly smooth.

Dress code is 'normal, casual, clean and tidy'.

Why should I try it?

It is a social gathering with gentle exercise; low stress; plenty of fun.
